Pre-trip Inspection Sample

SLACK ADJUSTER TEST

1. Make sure you park on level ground.
2. Make sure the tractor parking brake and the trailer emergency brakes are applied.
3. Chock the wheels.
4. Make sure the truck is in neutral. Make sure the switch is down.
5. Depress the clutch.
6. Start the engine.
7. Build the air pressure to 100-125 psi.
8. Secure in first gear.
9. Turn off the engine.
10. Ease off the clutch.
11. Make sure you put the key in your pocket.
12. Release tractor parking brake (push the yellow knob).
13. Release trailer spring brake (push the red knob) aka trailer emergency brake.
14. Pull each slack adjuster. Make sure there is no more than 1 inch free play.
15. If there is too much free play you need to adjust the slack adjuster with a wrench. Also if you adjust one slack adjuster make sure you will adjust the others.

TRACTOR PARKING BRAKE TEST

1. Make sure the tractor parking brake and the trailer spring brakes are applied.
2. Make sure the truck is in neutral. Make sure the switch is down.
3. Depress the clutch.
4. Start the engine.
5. Build the air pressure to 100-125 psi.
6. Put in first gear.
7. Apply tractor parking brake (pull the yellow knob).
8. Release trailer spring brake (push the red knob) aka trailer emergency brake.
9. Slowly ease off the clutch.
10. The truck should not move.
