Pre-trip Inspection Sample
SLACK ADJUSTER TEST
- Make sure you park on level ground.
- Make sure the tractor parking brake and the trailer emergency brakes are applied.
- Chock the wheels.
- Make sure the truck is in neutral. Make sure the switch is down.
- Depress the clutch.
- Start the engine.
- Build the air pressure to 100-125 psi.
- Secure in first gear.
- Turn off the engine.
- Ease off the clutch.
- Make sure you put the key in your pocket.
- Release tractor parking brake (push the yellow knob).
- Release trailer spring brake (push the red knob) aka trailer emergency brake.
- Pull each slack adjuster. Make sure there is no more than 1 inch free play.
- If there is too much free play you need to adjust the slack adjuster with a wrench. Also if you adjust one slack adjuster make sure you will adjust the others.
TRACTOR PARKING BRAKE TEST
- Make sure the tractor parking brake and the trailer spring brakes are applied.
- Make sure the truck is in neutral. Make sure the switch is down.
- Depress the clutch.
- Start the engine.
- Build the air pressure to 100-125 psi.
- Put in first gear.
- Apply tractor parking brake (pull the yellow knob).
- Release trailer spring brake (push the red knob) aka trailer emergency brake.
- Slowly ease off the clutch.
- The truck should not move.
